How do I hatch brine shrimp for feeding Angel fry?

HATCHING ARTEMIA (Brine Shrimp) is the only tricky part of raising Angelfish! The tall, straight-sided olive jars I like can hold six cups (1.4 liters) of brine, with a little room to spare. Click for large photo.(Where do I get big olive jars? We consume lots of Olive Salad while making wonderful New Orleans Muffuletta sandwiches. See colorpro.com/great-sandwiches/ for directions!) You can adjust temperature in the jars by varying the distance from the lamp. I use 80 degrees F (27C). Use sea-salt or horse salt from an agricultural supply store, 7 teaspoons (35cc)  to 6 cups (1.6 liters) tap water, treated for Chloramine if needed. This should give you a brine with a specific gravity of 1.022. Add a scant teaspoon of baking soda; Artemia hatch best at pH 8.4 or higher. I add 1/4 teaspoons (1.2cc) cysts, cap the jar, and give it a good shake. Hatching will start within 12 hours. With fast air flow, most will hatch in the first 24 hours. Discard any culture when the water clouds with bacteria or smells sour.

To harvest, pull out the air wands, stir, and wait a few minutes to let things settle. The nauplii will collect at the top near the light, and at the bottom farthest from the light. Use a wand to siphon them through an 8 inch (20 cm) circle of cloth (cut from an old sheet) over an 8 ounce (230 ml) margarine tub. Return the brine to the hatching jar and rinse the nauplii into the tub.

After 24 hours, siphon all the remaining nauplii from the oldest jar and start a new batch -- they have very little food value after that. Discard any cultures that turn cloudy or foul-smelling, and avoid inoculating fresh cultures with contaminated wands.

This setup can keep several batches of fry happy and well fed. To increase production, use more than 1/4 teaspoon (1.2cc) of cysts, or more jars, with faster air flow.

There other good ways to raise nauplii... or even adult brine shrimp! For details, study the scientific Artemia culture FAQ by Kai Schumann at websvirginia.com/angels/artemiafaq.htm.

My angel fish are three months old and just had their first spawn. The next morning I woke up and found that there were none there.

What can I do to prevent this?

Spawning at 3 months? Wow! 6-8 months is more typical -- you must be feeding them REAL good!

  1. Leave dim night light on so they won't forget that those are THEIR OWN eggs in the morning.
  2. Very young parents often do this. Watch 'em for a few more spawns.
  3.  Perhaps the eggs weren't fertile anyway. Your male may not be mature enough to actually fertilize the eggs... or maybe you have two females!
  4. Watch the spawning. If the male starts eating them during spawning, the female may try to drive him away.
  5. If these are fancy strains, perhaps they come from a long line of parents' who have lost the ability. You'll have to try raise the spawn in a separate tank ... if you don't mind perpetuating this kind of parents! The common Silver and Gold strains are usually more calm and better at this than Black or other fancy varieties.

I have a small angelfish (6-7 days) but they all die. Why that happened? What quantity of methylene blue I have to put in tank. Is it better to have boiled water for tank?

Please read the Q&A at  My Angelfish FRY are dying. What can I do? and let me know if it's hard to understand.

I use one drop of Methylene Blue per 2 gallons of water, but only ONCE when I transfer the eggs. Don't use it in the breeding tank. Change 50% water per day until all the blue is gone, it's poisonous to the fungus AND stresses the fry as well.

Boiling water does nothing at all, the Chloramines now used in all city water can survive this. See the page What about water?

Hello. Thank you for the help you give to me. But I have a problem. On the eight day all my angel hatchery dies and I can't know what the problem is. Help me please, because my mature pair of angels is breeding every week and I don't want to loose much more of my babies. I have loose 3 postures, all in the eight day of life.

Have you read the page and comments at My Angelfish FRY are dying. What can I do? Send me more details if that isn't clear.

I have 9 angels; 4 half blacks, 2 zebras, 3 golds. They are over 8 months old, but I have never seen eggs. Is this normal? What can I expect? I do not believe they have even paired off. do you think I have all females? Please help me!

Mathematically, the chances of all males or all females is 2 in 256, pretty remote. There are a lot of reasons for angels not to pair off... mostly, it's water changes. See the page at the link What about water?, where I say "Angels can typically survive water that isn't cycled, but thrive on frequent water changes. 25 to 50% daily is best, but 10% weekly is adequate in uncrowded tanks. Infrequent changes are survivable and can serve as birth control..."

Other factors: poor diet, pH outside 6.5 to 8.5 range, hardness over 200 dH, overcrowding, parasites, low temperatures, fish age and size, on and on... write me at wmdawes@colorpro.com and tell me more about your conditions.

Thanks! Your research may be useful. How do you hatch in Zero ounces?!? 6 oz. may not be enough... I'd like to know yield differences between 8 oz, 16 oz, and a gallon... write me with your results!

I have a pair of Black Marbles, (I think.) Noticed eggs in the Community Tank, immediately took all other fish out. Been reading every article I can, to learn more. Noticed the fish moved the eggs to a different spot. Now that they have hatched still moving them to different areas of the tank. Who is the one doing the primary care? Noticed the bigger of the two fish sucking them up and spitting them out a lot.

'Mouthing' the wigglers is a very common activity, I think they are cleaning them. Moving them here and there is also a popular pastime. Both parents do these things, hard to say if mom or pop is more solicitous.

Of all the eggs, there are only 9 live wigglers. Tank was only about 72degrees F. Didn't think they would lay in a temperature that low, so I raised the temp. gradually now at about 80. [Yes, 80-90F is better for fry. It is rare to see pairs spawning at 70F. Perhaps the very cold temperature may have interfered with fertilization.]  Is it possible if I leave them alone they'll take care of them without failure? [Depends on their parental instincts. Personally, I think it is better NOT to propagate strains who have lost the knack, but you may be able to raise more alive if you separate the eggs.] Should I remove the wigglers to another tank? Only 9 wigglers? [That's hardly worth the trouble. Keep the temperature of the pair at 85F, do daily 1/4 volume water changes, feed them well, and they'll spawn every 10-14 days, 500-1500 eggs, and a potential yield of 50 to 500 fry... depending.]  Don't know whether the male was doing his part of the job because well over 3/4 of eggs were white [Sounds like he needs practice, or the flow is too fast, or he was busy chasing other fish away from what looks like caviar to them...]  the smaller of the two fish ate all of the white eggs. Good housekeeping. Not all parents do this, it's a good sign.] Only had 3 angels in the tank,1 Lace type $ two Marbles so I successfully have a breeding pair this is really neat! Never experienced anything like this before, I have a lot of patience but not sure what to do. The smaller of the fish also sucks up wigglers and moves them also and seems to get upset with the larger one, could that be the mother? [In my pairs, the females an males spar a lot. The males seem to dominate more before the fry hatch, then the females get VERY annoyed with  what they perceive as bad parenting...]  My tank is 35 gallon Hexagon. I removed all the rocks. [VERY good.] A lot of slime on the glass should I clean it? [Algae in the tank is a good food source for growing fry, but not necessary.] If so with what? [I'd leave it in grow-out tanks.] PLEASE HELP BEFORE THE LITTLE ONES DON'T MAKE IT!

Since I have delayed answering for a week, my guess is that your original 9 fry have disappeared, but you may be looking at another 800-1,500 eggs by now. I know how exciting this is for you! You have been very observant, and this means you'll probably succeed, IF you follow the directions you'll find in this site. GOOD LUCK!

I am 18 years old, and wanting to get into breeding angelfish I have a 35 gallon hexagon tank with 4 angels, 1 gold,1 lace, 1 gold marble, and 1 black. I am an amateur at this but I would really like to get started, how would I identify male and females [read How can I tell the males from the females?] and when I do see eggs how long does it take for them to hatch [see What happens during the first week?]and what do I do then? [I suggest that beginners print out the ABFAQ and carry it around until they have read the whole thing ... see Single page ABFAQ, convenient for printing]...

You have an interesting mix of varieties, good for show but probably not very good for breeding. You say you have '1 gold,1 lace, 1 gold marble, and 1 black'... "Lace" isn't a variety at all. Though you can allow the above to pair off at random, the young may be dull and uninteresting blends. Hundreds of crosses are possible, and only a couple of dozen will give you interesting looking fry. It's better to decide what kind of young you want to see, then buy six juveniles that will produce them. Blacks and Koi are vicious and hard to raise; for beginners, I recommend Silver and Gold.

Elsewhere in this site you'll find information on Angelfish genetics. See "Oodles of Angels" at oodlesofangels.com/. Scott Saunders is an expert breeder and programmer. Scott has developed a coding shorthand for the angelfish strains, and presents a genetics calculator at oodlesofangels.com/genetics.htm, to help you predict what to expect when you cross various strains. See also www.angelsplus.com, and Steve Rybicki's page on genetics at angelsplus.com/genetics.htm, and Tony Minneboo's Genetics page at angelswest.com/genetics.htm.

If you plan on becoming a breeder, then use ONLY 'breeder quality' stock, not random junk from the pet store. NEVER mix new fish with healthy ones without a rigorous quarantine. Do read all of Steve Rybicki's FAQ, especially angelsplus.com/faq.htm, "Can I make a living raising angelfish?"

That should give you a start!

I have a question. I currently have a batch of newly hatched angels in a six gallon tank. They have been free-swimming for three days now (10 days after fertilization), and just today, a new set a eggs was laid in my community tank. If I were to hatch these eggs into the same six gallon tank as the ones that I already have, would the new, younger ones geet picked on by the older ones? Also, with approximately 150 fry, how soon will I have to move the to a larger tank?

Sorry not to answer this one quickly, you have no doubt figured out the answer if you left the new eggs with the older fry...

You must separate newly-hatching fry from their older siblings! The larger fry from the first batch will try to eat the new wigglers as soon as they see motion. This isn't good food for them... they often overeat and die, and it's not good for the new batch either! Move them before they start wiggling, 2-3 days after the second spawning. If you don't want to / can't raise the second batch, it's better to throw them away than to leave them to be eaten.

I have had two recent spawnings. One was with a silver and a marble. The other was with a gold and a marble. What kind of angelfish will be produced?

I wish I could tell you about what happens when you cross "x" with "y"... Scott Saunder's site used to have a great genetics calculator.

The next best sources for genetics inforation is at www.angelsplus.com or www.angelswest.com... if anyone knows of better ones, please let me know. There you'll learn that there are only 8 or 10 basic variants in Angels... and crossing between them can give good and bad results. HUNDREDS of variants are possible, but only 30 or so are particularly interesting.

I have a 20 gallon tall tank with 3 angels in it. I am going to try to breed them when they mature. I have 1 Amazon sword plant, and 3 Anubias varieties, and a giant hairgrass in that tank. What are some other plants that angels will be likely to breed on, feel secure with, etc.? Thanks!

Angelfish breeders use bare bottom tanks with no gravel, and therefore no live plants.

Amazon sword plants are very popular with spawning pairs... but don't work well for breeders. If the parents spawn on them, you have to cut the leaf off and move it to another tank, sinxe you can't raise fry in a tank with gravel. The "ideal" tanks setup is covered in the page What's the ideal setup for a breeding pair? Read that.

I keep a handful of plastic plants around. I use them only to discourage new parents from spawing on filter tubing. If I had a show tank, I would use only plastic plants. I have never had any success in keeping plants happy in show tanks. All I know is breeding Angels. Sorry.

the local pet stores sell brine shrimp but only in 1/2oz tubes where can I find larger quantities? I have 12 angels and want to start breeding, two local stores so far want to buy from me once I get started instead of buying from florida since the water and the climate in tennessee is different, they want angels from a local breeder. Just need the larger containers of brine shrimp.
